On Technology |
Technology in the public school classroom is a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because things like iMovie, Photo Shop, Power Point, Comic Life, Brain Pop, Webquests, and Read 180 definately have both the potential to engage students' interest and the potential to develop their critical thinking and advanced analytical skills. Technology is also a curse, however, because lack of funds hinder adequate access. Despite some obstacles, I have managed to use technology in my classroom. I often accompany lectures with Power Point presentations, including audio and video as well as text and images. I also incorporated into my S.A.T. Prep class the Official SAT Online Course from CollegeBoard.com, where students enroll in an online class set up by the teahcer and complete lessons, practice quizzes, and tests on the Internet. By far my favorite use of technology in the classroom was the MythSpace assignment I gave as part of a character analysis project in World Literature. Student were reading Edith Hamilton's Mythology and had to choose one mythological character to study in detail. Along with a five-paragraph essay and some other things, students had to create a MythSpace profile for their character. Students actually used the popular networking site MySpace to create their MythSpace profiles. Click the image on the right to see some students' pages. |
