Mini-Project: The Stranger
Due:
Overview: You will be divided into five
groups. Each group will be
responsible for preparing
a
different project based on The Stranger by Albert Camus. You will be present these
projects
to each other when they are finished.
Group
1: Setting
Instructions: Create a map or two- and/or
three-dimensional presentation of some kind on the setting of
The
Stranger. Include details about the time and
place the story occurs, such as geographical
details,
political details, fashion details, and details about what people believed.
Group
2: Characters
Instructions: Identify and describe the major
and minor characters. Then,
imagine the book is being
made into a movie and choose actors and actresses to play their parts. Be sure to explain why
you chose who you chose .
Group
3: Motifs
Instructions: A motif is a recurring aesthetic element, like sensory
details or a style of describing things
that is repeated throughout a work.
For example, one motif in The Stranger is the authorŐs use of short,
simple
syntax. This stylistic element
recurs throughout the book. For this
project, identify two other
motifs. Prepare a presentation of
some sort, including a brief rationale that explains each motif.
Group
4: Symbols
Instructions: A symbol is a concrete object
that represents an abstract idea. One
symbol in The Stranger
is Meursault
physical imprisonment in the jail, which represents the spiritual imprisonment
he suffers as
a result
of an existential crisis. Identify
three other symbols in The Stranger and prepare a presentation
that
explains them for the class.
Group
5: Themes
Instructions: A themes is a universal or philosophical idea that is at the
center of a story. For example,
one theme
of The Stranger is
the individual versus society, insofar as MeursaultŐs beliefs are challenged
by the
popular, albeit religious, belief in God and an afterlife in Heaven. Identify two other themes in
The
Stranger and
prepare a presentation that explains them to the class.
