Georgia TAPP

"The Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program® (Georgia TAPP) is a classroom-based teacher preparation option for individuals who have the basic qualifications to teach early childhood, middle-grades, secondary or P-12 education but have not completed a teacher preparation program. The program is not intended to replace regular college teacher education programs. It is, instead, an alternative option for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institute, but who did not complete teacher education preparation requirements as part of their degree programs. Georgia TAPP seeks to equip teacher-candidates with the skills to ensure a reasonable expectation of initial success in their classrooms, and to put in place a supervised internship/induction program that will help them move toward subsequent mastery of teaching."

Dekalb County School System

The Dekalb County School System is authorized to admit highly qualified candidates into its own Teacher Alternative Preparation Program. Dekalb TAPP hires teachers who majored in the subject they want to teach but who are not certified and offer them a route to certification while working. In order to recieve certification, teachers must meet certain requirements within three years or less. These includes taking tests (SAT, GRE, PRAXIS, and/or GACE), observing and being observed by other teachers, completing courses prescribed in an Academic Plan, and lastly assembling a Teaching Portfolio. Once these requirements have been met, the program coordinator recommends the candidate for certification by the Professional Standards Commission.
